Tamil Nadu’s electricity demand has climbed to a new record of 21,211 MW, driven by intense summer heat and increased use of air-conditioners in homes.
Officials said the peak was recorded at 10.30 pm on April 28, as power consumption stayed high from morning till midnight in many households.
The state has been seeing a steady rise in demand since March, with factors including wider use of electric vehicles, school summer holidays and IPL cricket matches leading to heavier TV and AC usage.
Another contributor has been the reported shortage of commercial cooking gas cylinders, prompting several hotels to rely more on electric stoves.
Despite the record demand, power utility officials said there was adequate supply to meet the load, and no shortage was reported.
