Washington: The US State Department’s plan to include President Donald Trump’s photograph on special passports to mark the country’s 250th Independence anniversary has triggered strong objections from the opposition Democratic Party.
According to the report, the commemorative passports are also expected to carry a gold-coloured version of Trump’s signature. The initiative is being advanced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The development comes alongside other anniversary-linked proposals. The report says efforts are under way to place Trump’s signature on US dollar notes, an initiative attributed to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
In addition, the federal arts commission has approved the release of a 24-carat gold coin bearing Trump’s likeness.
Democrats argue the passport move breaks with precedent, noting that no sitting US president’s image has previously appeared on American passports.
