New Delhi: A video of a Bangladesh parliamentarian warning of possible fallout if the BJP forms the government in West Bengal has gone viral online.

West Bengal’s Assembly election was held in two phases, with counting scheduled for May 4. Exit polls have indicated that the BJP could secure a clear majority and form the next government.

In this backdrop, Akhtar Hossain, an MP of Bangladesh’s National Citizens Party, told Parliament that the projections are “alarming” for his country. In the video, he is heard saying that if the BJP comes to power, Bangladeshis who have allegedly entered West Bengal illegally could be sent back.

He claimed such deportations could create a major refugee pressure in Bangladesh. The remarks have also revived the BJP’s long-standing allegation that illegal Bangladeshi infiltration in West Bengal has been enabled with political patronage.

The report also notes that the Union government had undertaken SIR-related measures aimed at identifying and removing illegal entrants, following which many Bangladeshis reportedly returned to their home country.
