Myanmar’s government has announced a second reduction in the prison sentence of Nobel laureate and pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The military seized power in 2021 after overthrowing the elected government led by Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy. Following the takeover, she was convicted in multiple cases, including corruption and allegations of leaking state secrets, and was sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison.

In a recent amnesty, her term was reduced to 27 years. Authorities have now cut a further nine years, citing compassionate grounds as she has turned 80.

Suu Kyi still has 18 years left to serve, according to her lawyer. The latest reduction means she would remain in prison until the age of 98 if the remaining term is completed.
