Traffic diversions have come into effect in Ooty from May 1, as the summer tourist season begins and visitor numbers rise in the Nilgiris district. Authorities have advised tourists to follow the revised arrangements.
Under the new plan, all tourist vehicles travelling from Ooty to Mettupalayam must proceed only via the Kotagiri route.
Vehicles coming from Mettupalayam to Ooty have been directed to turn left at Katteri junction and travel via Selas, Kenthala, Katteri Dam, Ketti, Balada and Lovedale, before entering Ooty town through Manjanakorai and Fernhill.
Except for vehicles carrying essential supplies such as milk, petroleum products and gas cylinders, other heavy vehicles will not be allowed to enter Ooty between 8 am and 9 pm.
Tourist vehicles have also been barred from using the Kalhatti ghat road. However, vehicles with Nilgiris registration, and vehicles registered in other districts but holding local driving licences, are permitted. Others must obtain an entry pass by contacting local police.
