Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday conveyed his greetings to the people of India on the occasion of Buddha Purnima, which is being observed on May 1.
Buddha Purnima is celebrated every year to mark the birth of Gautama Buddha and the day he attained enlightenment. The festival is observed on the full moon day in the Tamil month of Chithirai and is also known as Buddha Jayanti.
In a message shared on social media, Modi said the nation’s commitment to realising the lofty ideals of Lord Buddha remains strong. He added that Buddha’s thoughts should further strengthen the spirit of happiness and unity in society.
Meanwhile, celebrations are also being held at Prasanthi Nilayam, the ashram of Sathya Sai Baba in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh. The Buddha Purnima programme is taking place at the Sai Kulwant Hall today and tomorrow.
