Madurai’s Chithirai festival witnessed an ugly incident early Friday when Kallazhagar descended into the Vaigai river and some people allegedly threw footwear at devotees gathered on the banks.
The Vaigai entry of Kallazhagar is considered a deeply emotional ritual for devotees, many of whom arrive from different towns before dawn to have darshan. As part of vows, participants traditionally splash water using leather bags.
A similar incident was reported last year, following which Hindu Temple Protection Movement state deputy president Sundaravadivel moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. Justice L. Victoria Gowri had directed the Police Commissioner to monitor and arrest those involved in such indecent acts.
This year, more than 3,000 police personnel were deployed and over 60 CCTV cameras were installed for the event. However, devotees said footwear was still thrown during the ritual and urged police to review CCTV footage and take action against those responsible.
Sundaravadivel said such acts affect a person’s dignity, especially when women and children are present, and described the incident as akin to an “honour killing” of dignity. He alleged the High Court’s directions were not implemented and said he would approach the court again with evidence until the offenders are arrested.
