The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has released data on electricity generated by solar power plants across southern states in March. Tamil Nadu ranked first, producing 218.60 crore units during the month.
Officials and industry observers attribute the state’s strong performance to favourable weather conditions that allow solar plants to generate power for more than 300 days a year. This has encouraged private players to set up large-capacity ground-mounted solar projects.
Rooftop solar has also been expanding as households and businesses look to reduce electricity bills. As of March, Tamil Nadu’s total installed solar capacity stood at 13,579 MW, with average daily generation of about 4–5 crore units on non-rainy days.
Across the southern region, total solar generation in March was 613 crore units, the CEA said. After Tamil Nadu, Karnataka generated 181 crore units, followed by Andhra Pradesh (113), Telangana (71), Kerala (29), and Puducherry (10 lakh units).
For the period from April 2025 to March 2026, Tamil Nadu’s solar generation rose to 1,969 crore units, compared with 1,573 crore units in 2024–25.
