A technology-enabled fraud in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district has reportedly led to the death of a young woman, leaving her family devastated. The victim, Monika (28), lived with her husband and two daughters.
According to the family, Monika had been trapped for over five months in a so-called “digital arrest” scam. The callers allegedly threatened her by claiming she was linked to serious crimes such as kidnapping, and pressured her to remain on video calls while warning her not to contact anyone.
The family said the extent of the harassment became clear even during her last rites, when her phone kept ringing. When relatives answered a video call after the funeral, a man dressed like a senior police officer allegedly appeared on screen and continued to threaten Monika’s husband despite being told she had died.
After the incident, the family searched for clues and found Monika’s handwritten diary, in which she described the prolonged intimidation and mental distress. Her husband has filed a police complaint seeking action against the gang behind the alleged scam.
Authorities and media have repeatedly cautioned the public about “digital arrest” frauds. The report urged people to contact the cybercrime helpline 1930 in case of threats, and to call 104 for support if experiencing suicidal thoughts.
