Port Blair: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have entered the Guinness World Records by unfurling what was described as the largest Indian national flag underwater, spread across about 2,400 square metres.
The record attempt was carried out at Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island), a major tourist destination in the Bay of Bengal. More than 200 participants, including personnel from the Forest Department, the Coast Guard and a private diving team, took part in the operation.
Officials said the initiative was aimed at promoting the islands as a world-class hub for scuba diving and marine tourism. They added that the event would also help draw global attention to the region’s unique marine biodiversity and conservation efforts.
Lieutenant Governor Devendra Kumar Joshi received the Guinness certificate for the achievement. The administration has also planned another Guinness attempt on May 3 near the Lighthouse area at Swaraj Dweep, involving the creation of the tallest human stack underwater at a minimum height of 10 metres.
