The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical courses began across India on Saturday (May 3) at 2 pm. The examination is scheduled to continue until 5.20 pm.

NEET is conducted annually for entry into programmes including MBBS, BDS, Siddha and Ayurveda. Admission to MBBS and BDS courses has been made mandatory through the NEET entrance test.

The test carries a total of 720 marks, with four marks awarded for each correct answer. A negative marking system is in place, with one mark deducted for every wrong answer.

This year’s exam is being held in 13 languages, including Tamil. In Tamil Nadu, centres have been arranged in 30 cities such as Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai and Coimbatore.

Overall, the exam is being conducted in around 5,500 centres across 552 cities with tight security. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan extended his wishes to students appearing for the test.
