Chennai: PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has said the party will work to establish government medical colleges in six districts in Tamil Nadu after a new government is formed.

In a statement, he noted that the National Medical Commission has removed a rule that had been cited as a hurdle for starting new medical colleges and for increasing student intake in existing institutions in southern states, including Tamil Nadu. He said this creates an opportunity to set up colleges in six newly created districts in the state.

Anbumani reiterated PMK’s goal of having at least one government medical college in every district. He claimed that 13 new government medical colleges were started during the AIADMK government led by Edappadi K Palaniswami, while none were started under the current DMK government.

He also said the restriction on starting new medical colleges came into effect only in 2025, and argued that the DMK government could have opened colleges in the six districts in the four years before that but did not. He said PMK would initiate steps to open government medical colleges in Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Mayiladuthurai, Perambalur and Tenkasi once a new government is formed in the coming days.
