Washington: The United States is reviewing a fresh peace proposal sent by Iran, President Donald Trump said, while warning that military strikes could resume if Tehran “misbehaves.”
The US and Israel began joint attacks on Iran in late February, and efforts to end the conflict have since moved toward talks. After a first round of negotiations in Pakistan failed, both sides have been locked in a standoff over holding a second round, even as a temporary ceasefire continues.
According to reports, Iran has now forwarded new proposals to Washington through Pakistan, said to include 14 points. The demands reportedly include releasing frozen Iranian assets, paying compensation for war-related damage, withdrawing US forces near Iran’s borders, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ending a US naval blockade, and permanently ending the war on Iran and Lebanon within 30 days.
Trump said he was considering the proposals but expressed doubt that a peace deal would be reached. He argued that Iran had not “paid the price” for its actions over the past 47 years, making it difficult for him to even contemplate accepting the new terms.
A key sticking point is that Iran’s proposal reportedly does not address its nuclear programme. Iran is said to prefer discussing the nuclear issue only after a peace agreement is signed, while the US is not prepared to end the war without a firm nuclear-related agreement.
