Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Registration Department has begun steps to bring back employees who were placed under temporary suspension due to various cases.
Complaints had been raised at sub-registrar offices that the public were being made to run from pillar to post and that bribes were demanded for routine services. Between 2021 and 2026, cases were registered following vigilance checks, including allegations linked to unapproved plot registrations and resulting revenue loss to the government.
Many sub-registrars and assistants named in these cases were suspended. Even after departmental inquiries were completed, and where wrongdoing was not established, the suspension orders continued, prompting repeated requests from staff to be reinstated.
Officials said that in March, the then minister in charge, Moorthy, had permitted reinstatement, but orders were not issued at the time citing the election model code of conduct.
Now, Registration Department IG Dinesh Ponraj Oliver has cancelled the suspension orders of four sub-registrars and four assistants and allotted them new postings. Department sources said other eligible staff are also expected to be reinstated in the coming days.
