Thiruvananthapuram: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday said the outcome of Kerala Assembly election counting on May 4 could leave the Communist parties without power in any part of the country.

With post-poll surveys indicating a Congress-led win in Kerala, reporters asked Tharoor whether an MP could become the state’s chief minister. He declined to give a direct answer, saying the party follows an established process for choosing its leader.

Tharoor explained that after results, a party-appointed observer meets the newly elected MLAs to gauge their preference. The observer then reports to the party leadership in Delhi, which takes the final decision.

He added that the most significant development after the election could be the Left Democratic Front not being in office anywhere in India. Tharoor recalled that when Congress won in 2011, the Communists lost power in Kerala and West Bengal but still governed Tripura, a situation he said would not repeat this time.
