Chennai: Two Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies—Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district and Ambasamudram in Tirunelveli district—have recorded an unusual feature this election: not a single independent candidate is contesting.
The state’s Assembly election for all 234 constituencies was held in a single phase, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. Alongside major parties, voters across Tamil Nadu are awaiting the results.
Independent candidates are typically watched closely for their campaign strategies and presence on the ground, and their role can also draw attention during counting. This time, however, only these two constituencies have no independents at all.
In Ambasamudram, the contest is limited to party nominees, with candidates from Congress, AIADMK, TAVEK, Naam Tamilar Katchi and the Bahujan Samaj Party in the race. Adding to the contrast, the VIP constituency of Thondamuthur saw 16 independent candidates file nominations, yet none reportedly took to the campaign trail.
