Chennai: The Congress is planning to extend unconditional support to actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), according to sources. A formal announcement is expected soon from the party’s leadership in Delhi.

The latest Assembly election has produced an unexpected outcome in Tamil Nadu politics. TVK, formed just two years ago and contesting without an alliance, has emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 constituencies.

With 118 seats needed to form a government, TVK is short by 10. The result has reportedly left the DMK and AIADMK stunned, while smaller parties that had entered into electoral arrangements are now reassessing their positions.

Congress, which fought the election as part of the DMK-led alliance, won only five of the 28 seats it contested. Holding half of the 10 seats TVK needs, the party is said to be exploring how to turn the situation to its advantage.

Sources also claim that while many Congress functionaries had earlier favoured aligning with TVK, the idea was blocked by state Congress chief K. Selvaperunthagai and senior leader P. Chidambaram. Now, the Delhi leadership is said to be considering exiting the DMK alliance and backing TVK—an approach that could also influence the stance of other DMK allies such as Left parties, VCK and DMDK.
