Chennai: With the Assembly election results leaving Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) short of a majority, the party is exploring support from multiple parties to form the government.

TVK has won 108 seats in the recently concluded election, while 118 MLAs are required to stake claim to power. Senior functionaries said the party, despite emerging as the single largest, now needs outside backing.

According to them, Congress had earlier shown interest in aligning with TVK. They said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called Vijay to convey greetings, during which Vijay sought support to form the government; Rahul Gandhi reportedly asked to wait until the full results were in.

Party sources said that even with Congress support, the numbers may still fall short, prompting outreach to PMK, which is leading in five constituencies. They added that strategist John Arokiyasamy has approached PMK leader Anbumani, though a decision is yet to be announced.

TVK is also said to be in talks—through CPM MP Venkatesan—with the CPM and CPI, and has held discussions with the Indian Union Muslim League and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). Meetings with key representatives are reportedly being held in Chennai, even as some leaders have floated the idea of seeking AIADMK support as well.
