Chennai: After the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly election, attention has turned to where actor Vijay’s newly launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) drew its support from.
In the 2021 Assembly election, the DMK won power with 37.30% vote share (17,430,179 votes) and 133 seats. The AIADMK secured 33.29% (15,391,055 votes) and won 66 seats, while the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) polled 6.58% (3,042,307 votes) but did not win any seat.
In the latest election, TVK entered the fray and won 108 seats with 34.92% vote share (17,226,209 votes). The DMK polled 24.19% (11,929,144 votes), the AIADMK 21.21% (10,462,146 votes), and NTK 4% (1,972,537 votes).
Based on these figures, the DMK’s vote share is down by 13.11 percentage points compared to 2021, the AIADMK’s by 12.08 points, and NTK’s by 2.58 points. In absolute votes, the DMK is down 5,501,035 votes, the AIADMK 4,928,909 votes, and NTK 1,069,770 votes.
The comparison indicates that TVK’s surge appears to have drawn roughly a third of the earlier vote base of both the DMK and AIADMK. The data also shows TVK’s 2026 vote total is 203,970 votes lower than the DMK’s 2021 tally, even as TVK is set to form the government.
