The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election has dramatically reshaped the state’s politics, with Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) forming a government after breaking long-held assumptions about who can rule the state.
The editorial argues that the new administration must pierce layers of bureaucracy and expose entrenched corruption across departments. It says greater transparency in governance can address a large share of citizens’ everyday problems and help the state pursue long-term development goals.
A key warning is on law and order. Citing incidents from Vengaivayal to the Anna University campus, it notes that several accused remain outside the reach of the law, and courts have repeatedly flagged constraints on police functioning. It adds that justice in the Sathankulam case cannot be treated as a cover for other unresolved wrongs.
The piece cautions against shielding party workers by weakening the police, calling it a dangerous practice that can harm society. It says the TVK government can avoid this by allowing the police to act independently while placing strict discipline on party cadres.
It also points to public frustration with unfulfilled promises and policy posturing, including past responses to questions on pledges such as closing TASMAC outlets and scrapping NEET. The editorial says earlier governments lost credibility over missed projects, ineffective investment drives, strained transport services, and symbolic moves that contradicted stated ideals, and argues that correcting such administrative failures is essential for Vijay’s government to deliver good governance.
