Assam, a northeastern state, has retained a BJP-led alliance government for a third consecutive term. BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath again as Chief Minister.

The remarks came after West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee alleged that the state Assembly election outcome was “not a people’s verdict” but a “conspiracy”. She also said she would not resign from the Chief Minister’s post.

Reacting to her interview, Sarma said that if Banerjee does not step down, “dismissal” would be the only option. He added that the Governor would wait for a certain period and then take decisive action, asserting that the country cannot function according to Banerjee’s wishes.

Sarma also took aim at Banerjee’s claim that 100 seats had been “snatched” from the Trinamool Congress. He questioned whether, by that logic, the Congress winning 19 seats in Assam meant those were “snatched” from the BJP, and accused her of being unable to accept defeat.
