Kolkata: Kalita Maji, a former domestic worker from West Bengal, has won the Ausgram Assembly constituency as a BJP candidate in the recently concluded state elections. Her victory has drawn attention as a rare political rise from a modest livelihood to the legislature.
According to the report, Maji lived in the Khushkara municipal area and supported her family by doing household work in four homes, earning up to Rs 2,500 per month. Despite her financial struggles, she maintained a strong interest in politics and public life.
Maji first contested the Ausgram seat in the 2021 Assembly election but lost to Trinamool Congress candidate Abhedananda Thander by 11,815 votes. She continued her political work afterward, staying close to local residents and focusing on strengthening the party at the grassroots.
The BJP leadership gave her another opportunity this time. In the latest election, Maji secured 1,07,692 votes and defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Shyama Prasanna by 12,535 votes, the report said.
The report also noted that the BJP has formed the government in West Bengal after winning 207 of the 294 seats, ending the 15-year rule of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress. Maji’s journey from the kitchen to the Assembly has been cited as an example of the strength of democracy.
