Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Tuesday described Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s defeat as “regrettable”, calling him a seasoned politician and saying the outcome was disappointing.

Speaking to reporters, Tagore said Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay had contested against the BJP and won, and that the TVK candidate had also secured victory in Tirupparankundram. He asserted that communal forces would not be able to enter Tamil Nadu.

Tagore said the Congress leadership had taken a position on the political developments in the state. He added that the decision taken by the party’s political affairs committee on Monday night would be announced by Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar.

Emphasising Congress’ stance, Tagore said the BJP and the RSS should not be allowed to come into Tamil Nadu. He noted that the alliance with the DMK was formed for the elections and claimed that voters in the state had delivered a clear verdict.

He also expressed disappointment over the defeat of the Tamil Nadu Congress president, saying it should not have happened, especially in Sriperumbudur — a constituency associated with the late Rajiv Gandhi.
