DMK’s high-level action plan committee held discussions on the selection of the Opposition Leader, amid preparations to choose the party’s leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
According to the report, the meeting was held on Wednesday evening at Kurinji Illam on Greenways Road in Chennai, under the leadership of DMK Youth Wing Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin.
In the recent Assembly election, TVK won 108 seats to emerge as the single largest party, while DMK secured 59 constituencies and obtained the status of the Opposition. DMK is scheduled to hold a meeting of its MLAs at Anna Arivalayam on Thursday evening, chaired by M.K. Stalin, to elect the DMK legislature party leader.
The person chosen as the DMK Assembly leader will become the Leader of the Opposition. Sources indicated that the post could be offered to Udhayanidhi Stalin; if he declines, DMK Principal Secretary K.N. Nehru is said to be a possible choice.
The meeting was attended by former ministers K.N. Nehru, M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Thangam Thennarasu and Senthil Balaji, along with organising secretary R.S. Bharathi, communications secretary T.K.S. Elangovan and other committee members. Deputy general secretary Kanimozhi did not attend. Discussions also reportedly covered the selection of A.V. Velu as Assembly whip and I. Periyasamy as treasurer, besides the party’s defeat and next steps.
