The Madras High Court has directed its registry to number and list a petition seeking registration of a case against actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Vijay, and to place it for hearing on whether it is maintainable.
The petition was filed by M. Rajkumar of Kodungaiyur. He sought directions to examine materials gathered during income-tax searches, including documents, Vijay’s statement, assessment proceedings and the order imposing a penalty of Rs 1.50 crore, and to initiate action under the Income Tax Act.
The plea also requested that a case be registered under relevant provisions, including allegations such as cheating and criminal conspiracy, on the ground of alleged concealment of income. It further asked the court to direct that the documents be forwarded to the Enforcement Directorate to assess whether there is sufficient basis for inquiry under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The matter came up before a bench comprising Chief Justice S.A. Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan after the registry had not numbered the petition. The bench observed that once a petition is filed, the numbering process should not be kept pending merely to decide maintainability, and ordered the registry to complete numbering and list it for hearing.
Following the order, the numbering process for the petition has been completed, and the plea is expected to be taken up for hearing soon.
