Washington: Indian-origin entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has scored a decisive victory in the Republican primary to pick the party’s candidate for the Ohio governor’s race.

Ramaswamy, who has roots in Kerala, is described as a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump. He previously served in Trump’s cabinet as head of a government efficiency improvement department.

According to the report, Ramaswamy pulled ahead from the start and crossed the finish line quickly once counting began. Within hours, he secured more than 82% of the votes, defeating fellow contender and car designer Casey Butch.

With the primary win, Ramaswamy is set to take on the Democratic nominee, Dr Amy Acton, in the general election scheduled for November.

The report notes that Republicans have held the Ohio governor’s office for the past 20 years, a factor seen as boosting Ramaswamy’s prospects in the upcoming contest.
