Decision after legislative party meet
The BJP on Thursday said the decision on who will be the next Chief Minister of West Bengal will be announced today (May 8), after the party’s legislative wing meets in Kolkata.
Poll outcome
Elections to the 294-member West Bengal Assembly were held in two phases last month. The Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and in power for 15 years, won 80 seats, while the BJP secured a majority with 207 seats.
Assembly dissolved amid resignation row
The report said Banerjee did not accept the election outcome and stated she would not step down. With the government’s term ending, and amid her refusal to submit a resignation to the Governor, the Assembly was dissolved on Wednesday before a formal transition.
Leaders expected in Kolkata
BJP MP Saumitra Khan said Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Odisha Chief Minister are expected to arrive by around 3 pm. The BJP legislative party meeting is scheduled for 4 pm, after which the Chief Minister’s name will be announced.
