Former Union minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has praised Tamil Nadu’s political parties for their stance on government formation when an Assembly election produces no clear majority.
In a statement, he raised the question of what a Governor’s duty is if no alliance or party secures an absolute majority in the legislature.
Chidambaram said the established convention is to invite the leader of the single largest party—based on the number of MLAs—to form the government. He added that the leader must prove majority support on the floor of the Assembly, not at the Raj Bhavan.
He noted that this principle is backed by a Supreme Court ruling (1994 (3) SCC 1) and said he appreciated Tamil Nadu parties for explaining and insisting on this rule.
