The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have decided to extend outside support to the Vijay-led Thaveka, with each party having two MLAs in the Assembly.

Thaveka, which won 108 seats in the Assembly election, has staked claim to form a government in alliance with the Congress. However, with the alliance falling short of a clear majority, the Governor has not invited Vijay to form the government.

In this backdrop, Thaveka sought support from the Communist parties and the VCK through letters, and its representatives also held in-person discussions with their leaders.

Following internal meetings held on Thursday, both CPI and CPI(M) confirmed their decision to back Thaveka from outside. CPI submitted its support letter officially, while CPI(M) sent its letter via email.

Sources indicated that the VCK is also likely to follow suit and extend support.
