Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has said that not only TVK, but any party that can demonstrate majority support has the right to stake claim to form the government.
In an interview to an English news channel, the Governor said he did not prevent TVK leader Vijay from taking oath. He questioned how a party without a majority could be invited to form a government, stressing that only majority support needs to be proven.
He added that the claimant must provide details of who is supporting them, and that it is not necessary to bring all 118 MLAs to Raj Bhavan to establish majority.
Responding to a question on whether he would allow AIADMK and DMK—if they come together after winning the next-highest number of seats—to stake claim, he said he would accept and examine any party that comes with evidence of majority support.
The Governor said it would be sufficient if the claimants submit proof of support and then demonstrate their majority on the floor of the Assembly. If no one stakes claim with a majority within the next two or three days, he said he would take the next course of action.
