Washington-based reports say the United States and Iran are close to signing a 14-point agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between the two countries. The war involving Iran has crossed two months, and a temporary ceasefire is currently in place.
Talks on stepping back from confrontation have been held both directly and through mediators. US peace negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have been involved in discussions with Iranian officials, according to the report.
The outcome is described as a one-page document containing 14 points that both sides have reviewed. US-based private news outlet Axios said the agreement has been finalised and could be signed soon.
Key elements cited include formally ending hostilities, Iranian assurances for safe maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of a US naval blockade on Iranian ports. Iran is also said to agree to suspend uranium enrichment, potentially for up to 15 years, and to remove or disable its current stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
In return, the US would gradually ease economic sanctions and release frozen Iranian funds, the report said. After signatures, a 30-day period would be provided, while Washington has given Tehran 48 hours to convey its position on certain major provisions.
