Assembly dissolved after term ends
The West Bengal Legislative Assembly was dissolved on Wednesday after the tenure of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ended, but she did not submit her resignation, according to the report.
Election results and claim to form government
Polling for all 294 Assembly seats was held in two phases last month. The TMC, which has been in power for 15 years, won 80 seats, while the BJP secured 207 seats and announced it would form the government on Friday with a clear majority.
Governor invokes constitutional powers
Despite the results, Mamata Banerjee reportedly rejected the outcome as irregular and said she would not resign. With the government’s term ending, Governor R.N. Ravi dissolved the Assembly, citing powers under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution.
Next steps
Political observers said the dissolution could pave the way for the Governor to invite the party or alliance that is eligible to form the next government.
