Chennai: Educationist Jayaprakash Gandhi has said the cut-off marks for engineering admissions in Tamil Nadu are likely to come down this year, based on the Class 12 public exam results.
While 7.53 lakh students have passed the Plus Two examinations and are preparing for higher education admissions, educators note a decline in the number of students scoring 100/100 in multiple subjects compared to last year.
Gandhi pointed to sharp drops in full scores in core science subjects. In Mathematics, the number of 100/100 scorers fell from 3,022 last year to 732 this year. In Physics, it dropped from 1,125 to 105, and in Chemistry from 3,181 to 632.
He said this trend could reduce engineering cut-offs by about 2 to 4 marks, especially for candidates in the 180–195 range, while those around 160–170 could see a drop of up to 6 marks. He added that commerce and economics streams may not see major changes, and competition for government colleges could remain high as full scores in Accountancy have increased.
Gandhi also said cut-offs for fisheries and agriculture courses may fall by 2 to 4 marks, and that allied health courses such as BSc Nursing could see lower cut-offs due to fewer full scores in Biology. He advised students not to rush towards management quota seats, and instead review previous years’ college-wise cut-offs before deciding.
