New Delhi: The Centre has appointed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of the Naval Staff, and Lt Gen Raja Subramani as India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

Vice Admiral Swaminathan, currently serving as the Western Naval Commander in Mumbai, will assume charge on May 31 from the incumbent Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi. He is set to serve in the post until December 31, 2028.

Commissioned as an officer on July 1, 1987, Swaminathan is known for his expertise in communications and electronic warfare, and has held leadership roles during key operations. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and holds degrees from Jawaharlal Nehru University (Chennai), Cochin University of Science and Technology (telecommunications), and King’s College London (defence studies).

In a parallel announcement, the government named Lt Gen Raja Subramani as the new CDS, as the tenure of the current CDS Gen Anil Chauhan is nearing completion. Subramani is serving as Military Adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat, and Gen Chauhan is due to retire on May 30.
