DMK president M.K. Stalin on Friday congratulated the new government, saying his preference is for a stable administration in the wake of a hung Assembly verdict.
In a statement, Stalin said the election results did not give any party a clear majority. While the DMK-led secular progressive alliance fell short of the numbers needed to form the government, he said the front had secured a significant vote share.
Stalin reiterated that the DMK would not obstruct the formation of a new government and would function as a constructive opposition. He said DMK MLAs had authorised him to take decisions after consulting party office-bearers.
He welcomed the announcement by alliance partners that they would support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to form the government to avoid a crisis, while continuing in the DMK-led alliance on ideological grounds. He also noted that Congress MLAs elected under the alliance did not come to Anna Arivalayam to convey thanks and that the party had severed ties with the DMK.
Stalin thanked leaders of parties that stood with the DMK during what he called a testing period, and urged the incoming government to continue the schemes implemented over the past five years, including programmes for women, youth, students, children, marginalised communities and government employees.
