West Bengal is set to see its first BJP-led government after the party secured a clear majority in the Assembly elections, winning 207 seats and ending 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule.

At a meeting of BJP MLAs in Kolkata chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, newly elected legislators unanimously chose Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of the legislative party. Shah said multiple proposals were received, all naming Adhikari, and no alternative names were put forward.

With this selection, Adhikari will become the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. Speaking after the decision, he said the new government would work to fulfil the promises made during the election and coordinate with the Union government to meet people’s aspirations.

Adhikari, once considered a key aide of Mamata Banerjee, joined the BJP in December 2020. He had earlier drawn national attention by defeating Banerjee in Nandigram in the 2021 election, and in the 2026 polls he again defeated her from Bhabanipur.

The new cabinet led by Adhikari will be sworn in today at Brigade Parade Ground. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, senior BJP leaders and party workers are expected to attend the ceremony.
