Chennai: VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan on Friday submitted a letter extending support for actor-politician Vijay to form the government. Soon after, the Muslim League also announced its backing, raising the number of supporting MLAs to 120.
In the Tamil Nadu Assembly election, Thaveka emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats. On May 6, Vijay met Governor Rajendra Arlekar and said he had the support of 113 MLAs, including five from the Congress, and requested an invitation to form the government.
The Governor, however, maintained that an invitation could be issued only after proof of support from at least 118 MLAs—the majority mark. Vijay then sought support from parties with two MLAs each, including the VCK, CPI(M), CPI, and the Muslim League. The CPI and CPI(M) announced support, but the count still fell short.
With the VCK delaying a decision and the Muslim League initially not committing, Thirumavalavan held consultations with party functionaries while Thaveka leader Aadhav Arjuna continued talks. On May 9, Thirumavalavan provided a letter stating unconditional support for Vijay. Aadhav Arjuna thanked alliance partners and said democracy would be protected.
No details were disclosed about any understandings reached during the VCK–Thaveka talks, including posts or portfolios. After the VCK’s move, the Muslim League also declared support, taking the overall backing for Thaveka to 120 MLAs.
