VCK extends support to Thaveka

Chennai: Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has announced its support to Thaveka, strengthening the numbers needed for the party to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

Thaveka, despite winning the highest number of seats, fell short of a clear majority and sought backing from other parties. The Congress, with five MLAs, was the first to extend support, followed by the Communist Party of India and the CPI(M), which also declared official support.

After multiple rounds of internal consultations, VCK decided to back Thaveka. With Congress (5), Left parties (4) and VCK (2), Thaveka is stated to have reached the majority mark of 118.

With the coalition support in place, Vijay is set to resign from one of the two constituencies he won—Trichy East—triggering a by-election. VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan is expected to contest the Trichy East bypoll.

If elected as an MLA, Thirumavalavan is expected to be inducted as a minister in Vijay’s cabinet. Another VCK MLA is also set to become a minister, giving the party two cabinet berths in the proposed coalition government.
