Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is set to form the government in Tamil Nadu after securing the numbers needed to prove a majority in the Assembly. Party leader Vijay is expected to take charge as Chief Minister.
In the Assembly election, TVK won 108 seats, while Vijay won from two constituencies, requiring him to resign from one. This leaves the party with 107 MLAs, short of the 118 required to form the government.
To bridge the gap, TVK sought support from parties that were part of the DMK alliance. The Indian Communist Party, the Marxist Communist Party and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi—each with two MLAs—announced their support for TVK.
Earlier, the Congress had said its five MLAs would back TVK. With these endorsements, TVK has reached the 118-MLA threshold.
Following the developments, party workers celebrated outside TVK’s headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai, raising slogans in support of the party and its leader.
