New Delhi: After retaining power in Assam and making a major breakthrough in West Bengal, the BJP is now shifting its political focus to Telangana.
In the 119-member Telangana Assembly, the BJP currently has eight MLAs. The next Assembly election is scheduled for November 2028, and the party is beginning early groundwork to expand its footprint in the state.
The political landscape has also changed after former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s Bharat Rashtra Samithi suffered a heavy defeat to the Congress and is said to be struggling for popularity. Adding to the churn, his daughter Kavitha has launched a separate party.
The BJP is seeking to capitalise on allegations of corruption and unfulfilled promises against the Congress government led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, a Telangana leader with an RSS background and a former state BJP chief, is being considered for a renewed leadership role.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Hyderabad next week to launch development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore across sectors including highways, railways and textiles. The RSS has also begun organisational work on the ground, as the BJP aims to secure power in at least one southern state.
