Post-poll churn in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu’s Assembly election results have triggered fresh political uncertainty, with Congress reportedly ending its alliance with the DMK and moving closer to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). In Delhi’s political circles, the sudden turn is being discussed with sarcasm around the role of two leaders referred to as “PC”.
First ‘PC’: alliance continuity with DMK
According to the report, many Congress leaders in Tamil Nadu preferred an alliance with TVK. However, state Congress chief K. Selvaperunthagai is said to have pushed to continue with the DMK, seeking the support of former Union finance minister P. Chidambaram.
Chidambaram reportedly consulted Sonia Gandhi and later met DMK leader M.K. Stalin to firm up the DMK–Congress arrangement. The development is said to have displeased Rahul Gandhi, who then declined to campaign alongside Stalin in the state.
Second ‘PC’: push towards Vijay’s TVK
After the results, as TVK emerged as a major force, another “PC” — Congress leader Praveen Chakravarty, described as close to Rahul Gandhi — is said to have stepped in. He had been urging the leadership to align with Vijay, and after the results, he reportedly spoke to Rahul and pushed an immediate decision that Congress’s five MLAs would support TVK.
This, the report says, led to the DMK–Congress alliance breaking. Chakravarty was also seen as being close to Vijay, and there is talk that he may seek a Rajya Sabha berth with TVK’s backing.
Questions over Chidambaram’s future
Within Congress, discussions are said to be underway on what this shift means for Chidambaram’s standing. Chidambaram’s current Rajya Sabha term runs until June 2028, and some observers believe his political career could effectively end with the completion of that tenure.
