Kolkata: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s change to her profile description on X has triggered discussion after her party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly election.
Elections were held in two phases for the state’s 294 constituencies. While results were declared for 293 seats, a re-poll has been scheduled on the 21st in the Balda constituency following allegations of irregularities.
In the counting held on the 4th, the BJP won 207 of the 293 declared seats and formed the government for the first time in the state. The Trinamool Congress secured 80 seats, and Banerjee lost from her own Bhabanipur constituency.
Banerjee refused to accept the outcome and alleged a conspiracy in the election. She also said she would not resign as chief minister, after which Governor Ravi ordered the dissolution of her cabinet. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the state’s first BJP chief minister.
Amid these developments, Banerjee’s updated X bio describes her as the “Chief Minister of the 15th, 16th and 17th Assemblies” and as Trinamool Congress chief, notably avoiding the term “former chief minister.”
