Tamil Nadu has issued a government order (GO) clarifying the conditions for the state’s free electricity scheme.
As per the order, domestic consumers who use up to 500 units over a two-month billing cycle will be eligible for 200 units of free electricity.
For households whose consumption exceeds 500 units in the same period, the benefit will be calculated as 100 free units, the GO said.
The government stated that the additional subsidy burden, over and above existing subsidies, would be Rs 1,730 crore. It also said the earlier 100-unit free electricity scheme will continue.
The GO follows the Chief Minister’s signing of key files soon after taking charge, including the free power proposal that had raised expectations of 200 free units for all consumers.
