VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan on Friday said his party has extended support only for TVK to form the government, and that the backing will be from outside with no conditions attached.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, he recalled that VCK contested eight seats and won two, while Left parties also won two seats each. He said VCK and the Left have worked together since the People’s Welfare Front was formed and had agreed to take a joint call in the current political crisis.

Thirumavalavan said the Left parties first took a decision at their state committee and, based on that, VCK held consultations. He added that VCK’s high-level committee, through an online meeting, authorised the party leader to take the final decision, following which a letter of support was given to TVK.

He said the decision was driven by two reasons: preventing the political situation from being used to impose President’s Rule in Tamil Nadu, and ensuring that VCK does not become an obstacle to TVK leader Vijay forming the government when TVK is facing difficulty despite winning 108 seats.

Thirumavalavan also said it was “shocking” that the Governor was refusing to meet Vijay, and urged the Governor to protect democracy and the Constitution and not allow room for horse-trading. He maintained that TVK now has the required 118 seats to form the government and said permitting Vijay to form the government would be the democratic course.
