Chennai: Venkataramanan, from the Brahmin community and elected from the Mylapore constituency in Chennai, has been sworn in as a minister in the new Tamil Nadu government.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Vijay took oath as Chief Minister on Saturday, along with nine ministers. Venkataramanan is among those inducted into the cabinet.
The report recalls that in the first Assembly election in 1952, C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) became Chief Minister. When K. Kamaraj became Chief Minister in 1954, R. Venkataraman from the Brahmin community served as Industries Minister.
It further notes that from 1967, the DMK government did not include any minister from the Brahmin community. Between 1977 and 1987, H. V. Hande served as Health Minister in MGR’s cabinet.
After 1987, no Brahmin minister was part of the state cabinet, the report says. The inclusion of Venkataramanan in the Vijay-led government is therefore being highlighted as a return after 39 years.
