Chennai: TVK MLA JCT Prabhakar is set to be elected as the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly without a contest, after no other nominations were filed. The official declaration is scheduled for May 12.
A new government led by TVK has been formed in Tamil Nadu, with party leader Vijay taking charge as Chief Minister. The Assembly met today under pro-tem Speaker Karuppaiya, who administered the oath to newly elected MLAs.
The election for Speaker and Deputy Speaker is slated for May 12. Ahead of this, Prabhakar, the MLA from Thousand Lights constituency, submitted his nomination as the ruling TVK’s candidate.
The deadline for filing nominations ended this evening, and no other candidate entered the fray. As a result, Prabhakar is set to be elected unopposed, with the formal announcement to be made as per procedure on May 12.
Similarly, TVK MLA Ravishankar from Thuraiyur is expected to be chosen unopposed as Deputy Speaker, with an official announcement also due on May 12.
