Tamil Nadu government has issued an order constituting the ‘Sinhapen’ Special Task Force to strengthen women’s safety and reinforce law and order. The unit will be headed by an Inspector General (IG) and is to function under the Chief Minister’s direct monitoring.
The move follows the announcement made when Chief Minister Vijay assumed office, when the Sinhapen initiative was listed among three key files he signed. The initiative was presented as a measure to prevent crimes and violence against women.
As per the order, the task force has been set up initially at the Police Headquarters. Its sanctioned strength includes an IG, an SP, two DSPs, four Inspectors, eight Sub-Inspectors and 20 other rank personnel.
The unit will focus on creating a safer environment for women in public spaces and preventing unlawful activities. Its presence will be increased at locations such as bus stops, railway stations, educational institutions and IT companies.
The task force will also act on complaints and ensure appropriate follow-up action, the order said.
