The first sitting of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly began at 9.30 am on May 11. Pro-tem Speaker Karuppaiya administered the oath of office to the newly elected MLAs.
In the recent Assembly election, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single largest party and formed the government with the support of alliance partners. Party leader Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 10, along with nine ministers. Karuppaiya, the MLA from Sholavandan, was appointed pro-tem Speaker and was administered the oath by Governor Rajendra Arlekar.
When the House met under Karuppaiya’s chair, the oath-taking of members proceeded in sequence. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, elected from Perambur, took oath first, followed by other MLAs. The Chief Minister later congratulated the new members.
The election for Speaker is scheduled for May 12, when the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be chosen. Subsequently, within the deadline set by the Governor, the Vijay-led government will have to prove its majority on the floor of the House.
Meanwhile, an internal meeting of DMK MLAs was held at the Secretariat under the leadership of Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi.
