AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran on Monday announced the expulsion of Mannargudi MLA Kamaraj, citing his public support for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (Thaveka).

Kamaraj had won the Mannargudi seat as an AMMK candidate after contesting against DMK’s TRB Raja. Soon after the election, a video sparked controversy by claiming he had submitted a letter extending support to Thaveka.

Dhinakaran had earlier alleged that the party’s MLA was “abducted” and accused actor Vijay of engaging in “horse-trading” politics, and said he had lodged a direct complaint with the Governor. During the ongoing Assembly session, Kamaraj spoke on the floor and announced his support for Thaveka.

In a statement, Dhinakaran said Kamaraj’s move violated the party’s stand and was against its goals and principles, and declared that he was removed from primary membership and all party posts with immediate effect.

Reacting to the decision, Kamaraj said he did not see anything wrong in praising the Chief Minister in the Assembly and added that he was not worried about the party’s action. He also said he would vote in support of Thaveka during a confidence vote.
