Chennai: Chief Minister Vijay on Tuesday told the Tamil Nadu Assembly that “everyone is equal here,” stressing that the views of parties with a single MLA and those with larger strength would be given the same respect.

Beginning his remarks with Abraham Lincoln’s line on democracy—government “of the people, by the people, for the people”—Vijay said the House carries the responsibility of bringing people’s expectations to the floor and implementing them through plans and laws.

He said the Assembly’s work should be guided by the principle of ensuring that the maximum number of people receive the maximum benefits. He added that what is good must be accepted and what is not should be rejected.

Referring to the historic nature of the House, Vijay said a leader with the right qualities has been chosen to guide it and assured that all MLAs of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam would extend cooperation. He said the Speaker has been entrusted with safeguarding the dignity and decorum of the House and its members.

Quoting Thiruvalluvar, Vijay expressed confidence that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker would ensure proceedings are conducted smoothly, fairly and peacefully, while protecting democratic values and norms.
